Do I need the beekeeper's veil to go to Cape Breton Island in Canada?
Going there in August. Someone told me there are so many some kind of black flies there that I need the bug repellent or even the beekeeper's veil.
Is it really that bad that bug repellent isn't enough?
I think I know what you are talking about. It's the netting that you put over your head to keep mosquitoes and black flies from biting when you are out fishing or camping and such.
What I can tell you is that black fly season usually starts in June and goes until early July. They started earlier this year in some parts of Eastern Canada because of the really warm spring we had.
Mosquitoes are a nuisance all summer long, and are present more often where you have pools of standing water, and thick underbrush. They should not be that bad in August, but you never know.
The only place I have ever needed the netting was on a fishing trip in northern Quebec in late spring, early summer. You just could not stand still or five would land and start snacking on you within seconds.
I would just go with a strong bug spray and you should be fine. I personally don't find that the bug sprays you get in most department stores are not really that great for repelling them. What I would suggest is that you find something with a high concentration of the chemical DEET. I use Muskol or Ben's that is 95% DEET and it works really well. But as with everything in life there is always a catch. Studies show that DEET (as with many chemical pesticides) is really not that good for you and should be washed off as soon as you've moved indoors and no longer need the protection.
By the way, I think the highest DEET content you can buy in Canada now is 30%, as a result of Health Canada's changing attitude towards the chemical.
One less toxic substitute is anything made with eucalyptus oils or lemon grass.
And of course, candles made of citronella oil are proven to help keep mosquitoes away, although you pretty much have to stay in the range of the drifting smoke or scent. Just light em and keep them on the deck or patio.

Wedding dinner rehearsal dinners are a period to relax, calm down and enjoy a quiet evening before the big happening the next day. But adding some fun and games into the rehearsal dinner isn't such a tough idea. It's a fantastic way to assist everyone let off some steam, calm down and enjoy each other.

So, let's say the bride and groom are big into sports. If the wedding ceremony is to be contained the summer months and the days are long, how about a game of touch football or baseball? You can play bride's family against groom's family, men against females, or for a twist, the bride plays with the groom's family and the groom with the bride's family. Any combination works. The kinds of here is to have some fun, relax during each other's company.
Other outdoor activities can include something that is physical and might help people blow off steam. Has the bride been more a "bridezilla" than anything? How about a game of tag where she's it?
