How long can a tank go without filtration?
I was trying to change all the filter media on my aquarium (30 gallons, freshwater) and i accidentally broke it. Im not going to be able to buy a new one until wed or thursday. will it be ok for that long? I have about 9 fish and plants
As long as you keep tabs on the water quality, your fish should be fine for a couple of days. You should **never** change all your filter media. By doing so, you destroy much of the beneficial bacteria in your tank that comprises your biologic filter. Filter media should only be rinsed in tank water every other week or so to keep it clog-free. The only time media needs to be replaced is when it completely degrades (rare) or in the event of a tank catastophre such as accidental poisoning (in extreme cases). Medicating a tank shouldn't mandate media changes, but you will need to recycle your tank in most cases. You should have beneficial bacteria living in your substrate, so your "mini" cycle won't take as long as a start-up cycle. In the future, only rinse your media, don't replace it all.
Make sure you have test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. You'll need them because your tank is going to recycle most likely. You'll need to monitor your parameters closely to keep ammonia/nitrite levels safe for your plants as your biologic filter re-establishes.
Aggressive water changes should be avoided. 10-15% is all you should change on a weekly basis. The exception would be if you have very messy waste producing fish such as oscars or goldfish. With very messy fish and in slightly overstocked tanks 20-25% changes may be required. As your tank's biologic filter re-establishes, you may need to do 2 10% weekly to keep ammonia/nitrite levels down.

A Little Bit About Freshwater Pearls…
Freshwater pearls are produced by mussels, unlike pearls produced in the sea by oysters. When a foreign material is introduced in the mussel, it layers it with nacre to protect itself. Pearl growers introduce nacre tissue in the mussel so that the resulting pearl has no foreign material in it.
Freshwater pearls are produced by deliberately introducing a piece of nacre tissue in the mussel. So they cannot be termed "natural" pearls in the strictest sense of the word. However, today, a large percentage of even saltwater pearls are produced by artificially inducing a piece of foreign tissue in the oyster.
Finding The Right Jewelry
You can start your search online. Many online stores sell white pearls either loose or set in jewelry. A pair of drop earrings made from white pearl set with silver studs costs only around $50. Apart from drop earrings, you can also purchase stud and clip on earrings made of pearl. They don’t cost too much either.
Japan was once the leading producer of freshwater white pearls. While these pearls, known as Biwa pearls, are not as common in the US market today as they were in the 30 years between 1940 and 1970, you can still search online shops for them. The Chinese freshwater pearls, once the poor cousin to Biwa pearls, are today cheaper and as high quality as the Japanese pearls. Today, the choices are unlimited, so everyone can afford to buy these splendid gems.
